BC mining company cut 140 posts due to ‘challenging market status’

The BC mining company announced a significant pruning, stating that they are the result of global economic uncertainty and tariffs.

Glencore-owned Elk Valley Resources (EVR), which operates four steelmaking coal mines in the southeast of the BC with the Alberta border, said it is cutting 140 staff jobs.

In an email statement by the company’s communication manager Chris Stanele, Elk Valley blamed the “challenging market situation” for job cuts.

“EVR is working to improve efficiency and reduce costs in our business to ensure that our company is globally competitive.”

He said that the “most” of employees in cut jobs were reclaimed in other vacant positions within the company, but not all. He said that the workers who were not kept in another position are getting support.

The company’s website said it employs more than 5,000 people.

Sparwood Mayor David Wilks shared his perspective as to why Elk Valley Resources are cutting 140 staff posts in local mines. He explains the effect on the community, and which factors cut these jobs.

David Wilks, Sparwood, BC’s Mayor, which is located in the Elk River Valley, said that people regularly fly out and out of the area to work in the mine, many of which are from Alberta. But many people also live in nearby communities like themselves.

“It is definitely unfortunate that it’s right now for the coal industry sector,” he told the CBC Radio west Host Sara Panton.

Recently, Glencore Bought coal mining operations Wilks told Tech Resource Limited that he hoped that it would end the trimming for now.

Wilks said, “They have started seeing how they are going to run their company.” “And unfortunately, they have come against a lot of things that are challenging and … unfortunately, some people have to go.”
