5 million up-land pools were remembered in Canada, including Canada
Health Canada has issued a recall notice for more than 260,000 up-ground swimming pools sold in Canada since the early 2000s after nine children sinking in the United States.
Another five million pools are a recall advisor in America
The notice covered a series of Bestways, Intex Entertainment and Polygroup Pools sold by major retailers back by 2002.
Health Canada and American Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) say the pool has compression straps running out of the product that can “set a leg” for young children and allow them to reach unattained from water.
This can pose a serious drowning risk, regulators warning, and they are asking consumers to contact companies for repair.
No reports of injuries in Canada
To date, CPSC believes that at least nine children across the US have drowned after achieving access to the pools made in this way.
The deaths occurred between 2007 and 2022, including children between 22 months to three years of age.
Health Canada said in its memory that pool companies have not received any reports of incidents or injuries in Canada.
Consumers in the possession of these pools are urged to immediately contact the Bestway, Intex and/or polygroup to get a free repair kit – which will include a rope to replace the compression strap.
Owners of these pools should otherwise ensure that young children cannot reach the pool without supervision, regulatory notes – and optionally can dry the pool until the repair is done.
All the pools remembering are 48 inches (122 cm) or long – and can be identified by brands and model names listed on recall notices from both CPSC and Health Canada.
Pools are sold by model and location, but by 2002 and recently by 2025.
About five million of these now completed pools were sold all over America-including major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Loves, CostCo and Amazon included both online and in-store. Another 266,000 were sold in Canada.
