Air Canada flight attendants could strike next week. What should you know here

Air Canadian flight attendants could get out of the job early next week after heavy votes to approve the mandate of a strike.

Members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) voted 99.7 percent in favor of the strike mandate on Tuesday. But a strike is not yet set in the stone, both sides are back to the bargaining table starting on Friday. What you should know here:

When can workers go on strike?

If no agreement has been reached, the workers who can get out of the job as soon as possible are 12:01 ET on August 16, as long as 72 hours notice is given, according to the Union. This means that a 72 -hour strike notice can be issued.

CUPE’s Air Canada component Air Canada represents over 10,000 flight attendants and its holiday service, Air Canada Roose. Air Canada Express flights, which are operated by Jazz and Pal, will not be affected.

What is at stake in talks?

Union and Air Canada are interacting on a new contract after the last 10 -year contract period in March. The cup says that wages, work rules and unpaid hours are major issues in dispute.

According to CUPE, after boarding many duties done by flight attendants before boarding before boarding, after boarding and depulting, to do necessary security checks and help passengers, involve unpaid to the current salary structure.

The Sangh announced that members would be gathered at airports at Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary on Monday to raise awareness about the necessary role of flight attendants, and that representatives will be on hand to answer questions.

How is the conversation going on?

According to the Sangh, it will return to the bargaining table from Friday to 15 August.

Bloomberg told early this week That Air Canada offered an increase in total wages of more than 30 percent in four years.

Air Canada told CBC News that the bargain was unable to comment on the nuances during the process.

The airline said in a statement, “We can confirm that we have made a proposal to the union that will pay the best to our flight attendant in Canada – including addressing the issue of ground pay – in recognition of our airline’s success, in recognition of his contribution to the success of our airline,” the airline said in a statement.

Asked about a possible proposal, Kapa on Thursday told CBC News that “Air Canada has never submitted the proposal to the union.

“If this is actually the plan to present to the company, when we resume the conversation on Friday, we are ready to discuss it.”

Should you cancel your air Canada flight?

The airline has earlier stated that it is very early to consider disrupting their plans for passengers.

“At this point, our focus is on a new, conversation compromise with CUPE, so it is prematurely to speculate or discuss possible contingencies,” Air Canadian spokesman Peter Fitzpatric told Canadian Press.

Kapa has said that a strike is an option, but not the goal.

A specialist told CBC News that whose flights come on a day, which may be affected by a possible strike, should not cancel their flights.

“If they (Air Canada) are going to be due to you instead of canceling your (Air Canada) at McGill University’s Supply Network and Aviation Management, John Gradek told CBC News,” If you cancel it, you cancel it if you cancel it. ”

He recommended people who need to make it to their destination on a specific day, consider buying a refundable ticket from another airline to get their money back if there is no strike and proceed with their original ticket.
