Jolie hopes that aluminum sector tariff will get ‘millions of millions’ in relief
Industry Minister Meleni Jolie says that the $ 5 billion funds are expected to get “millions of dollars” from a $ 5 billion funds to help the aluminum sector of Cubek to help in the areas that beat by the US tariffs.
Almost all Canada’s aluminum is produced in Quebec. Jolie said that on Monday, the federal government has not yet determined how the tariff support fund will be divided.
Jolie said at a press conference in Montreal on Monday, “The Quebec aluminum sector will get its proper stake. And we believe that with Rio Tinto and with Ulowait, with the projects that are being discussed right now, with that it is hundreds of million dollars.”
Canadian aluminum and steel exports currently face 50 percent of American tariffs.
Jean Simard, president of the Aluminum Association of Canada, joined Jolie in the press conference and said that tariff relief is about ensuring that the region remains competitive on the world stage.
While Canada has aluminum markets in Europe and Asia, most part of the metal produced here is exported to the US, Simard said.
He said, “We produced 3.3 million tonnes of metal in 2024, which is our biggest year. We exported 90 percent of it, and 90 percent 90 percent were going to America,” he said.
Simard said aluminum growers sent more products to Europe in summer as they were losing money on exports to America
He also said that when the Canadian aluminum sector is looking at the future growth in European and Asian markets, it cannot cut a completely relationship with the American market.
He said that if Canadian growers had to stop shipments in the US, other companies would have taken their place.
“As the price is made in the US, you can expect the metal to expect to return to the US market,” he said.
