Ludhiana: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has initiated candidate selection for Ludhiana’s municipal corporation elections slated for late Dec. With the ruling party aiming to strengthen its grassroots presence, local leaders announced a detailed process that includes ward-level surveys to assess candidates’ winnability and public engagement, setting the stage for a competitive poll.
Sharanpal Singh Makkar, AAP’s Ludhiana district (urban) president, said candidate selection would follow strict guidelines issued by the party’s high command.Committees comprising minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, local legislators, and senior district members will oversee the process. A key step in the process involves a ward-level survey to evaluate the ground presence and support base of prospective candidates. Makkar emphasized that loyalty to the party, a clean public image, and strong community connections will be critical factors in deciding the final list.
AAP’s district secretary and spokesperson Paramvir Singh asserted that transparency would be the hallmark of the selection process. He added that AAP’s governance record, particularly the work of its six MLAs representing Ludhiana’s municipal wards, would bolster the party’s chances.
AAP is positioning the election as a referendum on the performance of its state govt. Treasurer Suresh Goyal highlighted past achievements, including the regularisation of 8,600 municipal corporation employees, building of mohalla clinics, improved road infrastructure, and free-power scheme. Paramvir Singh said digitalisation of services along with anti-corruption measures had eased bureaucratic burdens for citizens, which could resonate with voters.
CM’s connect with city
The party is also leveraging chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s personal connection with Ludhiana, where he lived for nearly a decade. Leaders claim Mann’s focus on the city’s development has resulted in substantial improvements, which will feature prominently in AAP’s campaign narrative. Two or three strong contenders vie for the ticket in every ward.
