Air Canada makes ‘difficult decision’ to cut management jobs

Air Canada is reducing several non-union management positions, it said Thursday.

Christophe Hennebelle, vice-president of corporate communications, said in a statement to CBC News the airline “reached the difficult decision” to cut certain positions after a “comprehensive review.”

“Air Canada regularly reviews its resources and processes to ensure they are optimized to efficiently support business operations and its customers,” he said.

Hennebelle said the cuts represent about one per cent of Air Canada’s total workforce; About 400 people.

Henebele did not answer questions about whether positions would be reduced by attrition or by not filling vacant jobs.

He said the cuts “will have no impact on day-to-day operations.”

The job cuts came on the same day Air Canada announced them Expand service to Toronto’s Billy Bishop AirportThat includes four new daily flights to US destinations – New York, Boston, Chicago and Washington, DC – as well as two new flights to Ottawa and one to Montreal.
