Alberta has appointed a new chief medical officer of health.

Dr. Vivian Sattorp, who has been the chief medical health officer for the province’s southern region, has been appointed to the role effective Thursday, according to a release from the provincial government.

There have been several changes to the position since 2022, when Premier Danielle Smith, fulfilling an election campaign promise, fired Dr. Deena Hinshaw over frustration with COVID-19 health measures.

Dr. Mark Joffe took on the role on an interim basis, but left earlier this year when his contract expired.

Soon after, Dr. Sunil Sukram was temporarily appointed to the post.

Health Minister Adriana Lagrange says Sutorp was already overseeing all aspects of public health in the south, supporting workplace health and safety and infection prevention and control.

“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Satorp to this important role and look forward to his leadership in advancing public health priorities for all Albertans,” LaGrange said in a statement Thursday.
