Mumbai: BMC initiated seizure and attachment actions on 3,605 property owners who were evading property tax payments since the beginning of the current financial year, April 1, 2024.
These properties include plots, residential and commercial buildings, commercial units, and industrial units. The highest number of actions were taken in the western suburbs with 1,767 properties, followed by 1,232 in the Mumbai City Division, and 606 in the Eastern Suburbs.
The total outstanding tax from these 3,605 property owners amounts to Rs 1,672.4 crore, of which Rs 219 crore was collected.The tax assessment and collection department set a target of collecting Rs 6,200 crore in taxes for the financial year 2024-25.
“Various measures are being implemented to achieve this goal. Notices under Section 203 are being issued to major defaulters who are avoiding paying property taxes. If taxes are not paid within the specified period, items within the property will be seized and auctioned. In this context, from April 1, 2024, to Nov 25, 2024, seizure and attachment actions were taken against 3,605 property owners,” said an official. tnn
