Canada post is on strike. What should you know here
Canadian people were surprised late on Thursday afternoon, when the union representing the post workers of Canada Suddenly called for a nationwide strike,
This step came a few hours later by the federal government Proclaimed major reforms to CanadaInstructing Crown Corporation to abolish home delivery and close some rural mail outlets.
The Canada Post lost $ 448 million before the tax in the first half of 2025 after a loss of $ 30 million in the first half of 2025.
And Public Works and Procurement Minister Joel Lightbound said that the corporation is losing about $ 10 million per day-the sanctuary government despite providing an injection of $ 1 billion earlier this year to keep it running.
The Canada Post welcomed the changes. But the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said it was “angry” and posted a notice on its website on Thursday evening stating that all his Canada post members were running out of the job.
The statement said, “In response to the government’s attack on our postal service and workers, immediately effective, all Cupw members in Canada Post are on a nationwide strike.”
What you should know here:
When does the strike begin?
it is already.
Technically, Canada Post Workers are on strike before months.
You may remember the postal strike in the holiday season last year. Everything from Christmas gift to passport delivery was interrupted for 32 days.
Canada’s Industrial Relations Board was asked by the Labor Minister to order the employees back, and since then they have been reconciling again.
But things such as overtime restrictions or a work-to-num campaign can be considered a “strike” move, and Cupw has been taking those types of action since May.
The union representing Canada Post Workers says that its members will be on a nationwide strike in the next 24 hours, describing the situation as ‘fluid’.
Then on Thursday, union negotiator Jim Gallant told CBC Shakti and politics The units were already organizing picket lines and some workers were already away from the job. He said that he hoped that all the workers would be on strike completely by Friday.
The minister, Galant said, “There is a harsh mistake.”
The Canada Post issued a statement on Thursday evening, stating that “it was disappointed that the Sangh chose to increase its strike activity, which would further spoil the financial position of the Canada Post.”
Why did this happen?
The union representing 55,000 postal staff says that it was caught by the government’s changes and argued the Canada Post and the government is creating conditions that reduce their letters and parcel services demand.
After the Canadian workers, there is no collective agreement at present. They have been in contract talks for about two years on issues such as wages and part -time workers, while the postal service continues to increase significant financial loss.
Earlier this month, the Sangh dismissed the government’s proposal for 13 percent of the salary hike, saying that it was reduced by 19 percent of the Sangh’s demand.
While Cupw said it was ready to work with the Canada Post to allow the weekend delivery and part -time workers to connect, it said that the corporation went away from the table of talks.
Now what happens to my mail?
The Canada Post said in a statement that no mail or parcel would be processed or distributed during the strike, and the guarantee of service for goods is already suspended in the mail.
“No new item will be accepted until the national disruption is over.”
Canada Post will continue to distribute government benefits checks – including old age safety, Canada Child Benefit and Canada Pension Plan – as well as living animals during the strike.
It states that all mail and parcels will already be secured in the postal network and distributed as soon as possible once the operation is resumed.
According to the corporation, the backlog of the package and letters “some million” went deep after last year’s holiday season strike.
Am I going to lose my home-letter?
In the announcement of its reorganization on Thursday, Lightbound, the minister responsible for the Canada Post, made several possible changes, including the Canada Post authorized to end home delivery.
About four million addresses are still directly matched in their homes.
Lightbound said that the government is picking up the regulation on community mailbox conversions – a step that will bring the remaining addresses to the three quarters of the Canadian that already receive mail through community, apartments or rural mailboxes.
He said that the move would save about $ 400 million annually.
The Canada Post will also be allowed to close some rural post offices.
Public Works Minister Joeli Lightbound was asked on Thursday what the government thinks of how people operate Canada posts, especially around door-to-door delivery will accept major changes.
How soon will all this happen?
The Canada Post should have a plan within 45 days that explains how it will implement these changes, according to the minister.
He estimated that the door-to-door delivery would probably take the switch to the community mailbox, although many people would see changes very soon.
