Carney promises to curb non-American steel imports as indications of domestic industry

Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to crack more than cheap, foreign steel entering the Canadian market by the end of the month, as the domestic industry continues by US President Donald Trump’s tariff.

Carney announced in Hamilton on Wednesday morning, breathed a sigh of relief from an industry that has already seen the level of trimming and low production in the weeks as the US had imposed a steep.

In June, the government announced a change in the tariff quota system, which allows a determined level of the product to enter Canada at a low tariff rate by limiting steel imports from countries. This is not free trade agreement for 2024 import levels,

But those quota was criticized by the industry because it is still very high. Canadian steelmakers have long alleged that foreign companies have been supplying steel to the Canadian market at ultra-cum prices, usually known as dumping, making it difficult for them to compete.

Look Carney says that Canada’s steel industry needs to be preserved:

‘This is a conversation’: Carney asked about the possibility of American tariff in a deal, potential vengeance

Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking at Hamilton on Wednesday at an event about Steel, refused to offer nuances around the conversation with the US, saying that we would see, ‘when Canada would put more tariffs.

Carney said the change in the quota will “ensure that Canadian steel producers have a large part of the Canadian market.”

The steel products of partners of the non-free trade agreement, including China and Türkiye, will see their tariff rate quota tightening in half of 2024 versions. Carney said that 50 percent tariff will be imposed on any imports beyond those levels.

Ottawa is also proceeding to clamp on steel from partners who have free trade agreements with Canada, other than the US and Mexico. The federal government said that 50 percent tariff would be applicable to imports crossing 2024 editions.

Carney said Canada would implement an additional tariff of 25 percent on imports of all non-American countries with steel melting and put in China.

“Import supplies about two-thirds of the current Canadian consumption of steel than one-third of steel consumption than one-third for the United States and less than one-six for the European Union,” Carney said.

‘Very fresh’: Canadian steel company reacts to Carney’s latest trade announcement

A player in the Canadian steel industry is reacting positively to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s promise, which is to move in the amount of cheap, foreign steel that enters the Canadian market. The announcement comes when the industry is being affected by US President Donald Trump’s tariff.

He said that the existing arrangements with the Canada-US-Maxico Agreement (CUSMA) would remain the same.

Carney did not make any changes to the US counter-tariffs as the two countries work towards their August 1 deadline.

Happy with steel association changes

Catherine Cobden, president and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association, said he announced “with relief” with the announcement.

“This is definitely a better place where we were yesterday,” he said about the change of quota.

He said that the new cap will help Canadian steel manufacturers to “resume the domestic market”.

“I can’t sit here and tell you that it will completely offset the loss from the United States, but it will help us,” Cobden said.

Citing national security concerns, the industry has been stopped after 25 percent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum areas in March have been stopped. He increased the tariff by 50 percent in June.

Cobden said that steel production was 30 percent decline in May. Once the numbers are once working for another plmet, depicting 50 percent of tariffs.

Michael Garcia, CEO of Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Mary, Onts., Said that change is “steps ahead.”

He said that June’s tweet to tariff rate quota left the “fully open” window to countries to unload steel, and Wednesday’s announcement “would shut that window slightly.”

He said whether the latest step of Carney is far away, August 1 will depend on the terms of the deal.

“I believe that we are currently in a very strategic discovery of chess, but conservatives are consistent and firm that we want to try and the best deal for Canada.”

Cobden, head of the Steel Association, said its industry “is not interested in baseline tariffs.”
