The fifth edition of Karaikudi Sandhai returns this year to a spacious new venue with ample parking. Organized by the Karaikudi Nagarathar Sangam, the one-day exhibition celebrates the rich heritage of Chettinad culture through its craftsmanship, cuisine and local enterprise.

Sangam committee member M Letchumanan says the program aims to create a platform for community members who are skilled producers but do not have access to wider markets. “Our mission is to showcase and popularize Chettinad heritage and culture without a profit motive. This year, we are also focusing on kidpreneurs aged seven to 17, encouraging heritage-led entrepreneurship and empowerment at the grassroots level. We have offered stalls to children for free, allowing them to sell products such as home decor items, key holders, paintings, crafts and baked gifts.”

Tourists can also explore traditional arts and handicrafts.

On a larger scale this year, the exhibition will have more than 130 stalls. New additions include a counter by M Ramanathan to assist families in exchanging old share certificates, as well as a counter offering financial packages for small businesses. An activities and play area for children has also been started.

Visitors can explore a wide range of products including authentic Chettinad cotton and silk sarees, heritage jewellery, traditional arts and handicrafts, homemade masalas, pickles and podis, antique brass and silver artefacts, koodais and kotans, clay crafts, oils, snacks and spices, books, home goods, children’s clothes and made-up products. A live snack counter will serve hot Vela Appam, Paniyaram, Kandahar Appam and filter coffee. For an intense culinary experience, the traditional Thalaivaazhai Ilai lunch will be available with prior booking.

Karaikudi Sandhai will be held on January 4 from 10 am to 8 pm at Sri Ramachandra Convention Center in Thiruvanmiyur. For details, call 7299193311.
