Ludhiana: As the civic body officials have moved towards bringing down the mountains of decades-old legacy waste at Jainpur as well as Jamalpur, they are unable to complete the installation of static compactors at some locations like grain market at Gill Road. The tussle between the Mandi Board and municipal corporation officials is said to be the cause of delay as both departments are unable to decide on the location where the compactor is to be installed.
The issue had started with a dump at the banks of Sidhwan Canal against which a petition was also filed in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The garbage was going into the canal and under the pressure created by the NGT, the officials shifted the garbage dump to another location, but Mandi Board land is still required.
Recently a meeting also took place where the Mandi Board officials had requested the MC to get another location for the compactor. The officials claimed that the Mandi Board was offering the land that was under encroachment and they wanted a clear land so that there should not be any issue in the installation of a compactor.
Medical officer (health) Vipal Malhotra said, “The land is not allotted yet by the Mandi board. We are ready with all arrangements and as soon as the land is decided, we will go ahead with the same.”
Notably, even at the grain market near Jalandhar bypass, garbage compactors have still not been installed. At that location also heaps of garbage can be seen lying in the open, spreading foul smell and making it difficult to pass through the road. Near Gill Road grain market too several garbage points are located and if the municipal corporation is successful in establishing their compactor at this site, they will be able to deal with garbage issue of those areas.
