Dharavi Redevelopment: Over 60,000 Tenements Surveyed, 25,000 Verified | Mumbai News

60k Dharavi tenements surveyed, 25k verified

Mumbai: Over 60,000 structures have been surveyed and more than 25,000 tenements verified in Dharavi as part of its redevelopment.
Adani Properties, awarded the Dharavi rehabilitation project (DRP), engaged a private agency for the survey. “Over 50 teams work daily across Dharavi’s five sectors and 34 zones,” said a senior DRP-Slum Rehabilitation Authority official. “Each day, 300-400 tenements are numbered and 200-250 homes verified.”
The survey begins with land reconnaissance, tenement numbering, and light detection and ranging mapping. The door-to-door verification assigns unique codes to tenements.
A survey conducted 16 years ago had estimated 64,000 ground-floor tenements as eligible in Dharavi. A fresh survey began in March this year to determine eligibility.
DRP plans to construct 1.5 lakh homes for ineligible residents on about 540 acres in the suburbs. Ground-floor structures built before Jan 1, 2000, qualify for free in-situ rehabilitation. Homes built from 2000-11 will be relocated outside Dharavi at a nominal cost under a central scheme, while residents of upper floors and those who arrived after 2011 will be given rented or hire-purchase options in modern townships.
