Discovery Jiopark, located on the upper half of the Bavnista Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador, has regained its entire position as a global Geopark under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The region’s rock formation and fossil found that the park was earlier earned its international honor in 2020. But in June, the region was in danger of losing its rare position, when UNESCO warned the park to make changes.

Every four years, independent assessors travel to UNESCO’s global Zioparks to travel to four or five-day site, to determine that a park will maintain its position. The assessors then issue a green, yellow or red card to the site to indicate their active position.

Green card indicates that the position of a site has been renewed, a yellow card indicates that it has two years to change or the risk of getting a dreaded red card, resulting in loss of its condition.

The site operators requested by UNESCO were in danger of losing their groin cards after stable funding and full -time staffing, developing inland sites with signals, expanding inland sites with signals, updating people, increasing access and visitor security and coordinating tourism promotion with partners.

Discovery Ziopark earned its certification for its Ediyakran fossils in 2020 – some of which can be accessed from the boardwalk in the port union – 560 million years old and some of the planet’s early multicellular organisms.

The park complied with the recommendations, resulting in the restoration of its green card in Chile in the weekend.

It is one of the five Jioparks in Canada and one in 229 worldwide.
