Mumbai: A 70-year-old resident of Santacruz (east) has lodged a complaint stating that he lost Rs 2.6 lakh of his pension money to a ‘digital arrest’ scam.
The fraudster approached him with baseless claims of complaint being lodged about his cellphone number being used to send “inappropriate” messages.
The complainant, JA Periera, said that the fraudster had obtained his Aadhaar card details for investigation.The scamster, impersonating a police officer in uniform during a video call, directed the elderly man to stay at home from Nov 14 to 20 and asked him to provide personal details as part of the investigation.
“On Nov 21, the scamster convinced Pereira to transfer his savings to a bank account for verification, assuring that the money would be returned soon, said an officer from Vakola police station where an FIR was filed on Nov 22. —V Narayan
