Federal Government is ready to work on the use of AI in public service

The federal government has signed an agreement with a Canadian Artificial Intelligence Company to identify areas where AI can increase public service operations.

Kohere will consider how its products can improve federal public services, Sophia Oslis said, spokesperson of Artificial Intelligence Minister Ivan Solomon.

He said that the agreement establishes “initial stage cooperation” between the federal government and the tech company in Toronto. Cohere develops large language models, a type of general AI focuses on the language, and the company specializes in AI services for businesses.

“Attention is to identify that the Canadian-made AI equipment of Kohere can improve public services, making them sharp, smart and more secure. While no formal deadline is attached, the government sees it as a priority and is quickly moving forward to detect the real-world applications,” the Ooulis said.

Ouslis stated that the agreement does not include the “financial component”.

Kohere said blog post Tuesday signed the agreement “to replace the public sector with our safe, sovereign AI technology.”

Using artificial intelligence to increase efficiency in public service was one of the election promises of Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney also promised to captivate the size of public service, and most departments and agencies have been asked to cut the expenses of up to 15 percent since then.

The government news release states that the AI “has the ability to greatly improve government operations and services for Canadian,” and Ottawa “is demanding to exploit the power of this transformative technology, creating a vibrant med-in-Canada technology sector.”
