The union representing Air Transat pilots said Wednesday that its members had voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike.
The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) said in a news release that, although the results give the pilots union’s governing body the authority to declare a strike as soon as Dec. 10, it does not in itself constitute an immediate strike notice.
Negotiations between ALPA and the airline began in January. A representative of the union said it is seeking a collective agreement that protects and improves job security.Working Conditions, Compensation, and Quality of Life.”
Both sides abandoned the agreement on 18 November. According to the union, they are currently in a 21-day cooling-off period that ends on December 10. CBC News contacted Air Transat for a statement.
Air Transat ALPA Master Executive Council President Bradley Small said, “This vote sends an undeniable message to Air Transat management: We are unified, determined and we have earned a contract that reflects today’s industry standards, not 2015 standards.”
“Let us be clear, we do not want to strike. Our goal is to reach a fair agreement at the negotiating table,” Smalls said, urging management to “negotiate seriously.”
