Green Activists Plan Major Protest Over Pollution from Dyeing Units in Ludhiana | Ludhiana News

Green activists visit Tajpur Road ahead of stir

Ludhiana: Residents living near Tajpur Road on Friday evening shared their grievances with a team from ‘Kale Pani Da Morcha’ when they visited them to make them aware of the upcoming protest to plug the outlets of common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) of dyeing units.
During the interaction, the residents shared how they are suffering due to such dyeing units. Mohinder Singh, a resident of the area, said that due to pollution by the factories, respiratory diseases are common in the area.
“Cancer is also spreading in the nearby colonies,” he added.
JP Bhatt from Tajpur Road Market Association said that after evening, thick ash from the factories engulfs the area, and roofs are covered with soot. “Going out of the house in the evening is harmful to our health,” he added. Meanwhile Manjit Singh Arora, General Secretary of Bharatiya Kisan Union, said that Punjab is named after five rivers, but these industries have polluted the drinking water.
“Groundwater has been polluted for about one kilometer on the side of Buddha Dariya, and this is the water that people are drinking. The members of the farmers’ organization will come out in large numbers on Dec 3 and support the Morcha in this public welfare cause,” he said.
The residents shared that some years ago, a dharna was held by Preet Nagar residents, but Punjab pollution board officials officials took no action and allowed the factories to run. “The factories are illegally dumping toxic water into Buddha Dariya and causing massive pollution,” said another local. Dr Amandeep Bains from Kale Pani Da Morcha said the Punjab government is encouraging these factories at the cost of the common public. Another activist, Kapil Arora, said that when governments fail to fulfill their responsibilities, then people have to come out and raise their voices to protect their constitutional rights.
