
7 Maplehrest reformers should inquire for complex prisoners who died after starting today
Between June 2017 and October 2019, an inquiry is going on today for seven men killed in drug overdose at Maplehrest Correctional Complex at Milton, Onts.
Five of the seven were originally from the Waterloo region or Guelof.
In the following Mapleharst or after transfer to Hellet Healthcare, his death dates were included:
- Wesley da Silva, 40, Cambridge, October 4, 2019.
- Cory Hemsted, 31, Brampton K, 19 June 2029.
- Sean Irwin, 38, Kitchenar K, October 29, 2018.
- Derek Johen, 28, Magnetwan K, 20 June 2017.
- Curtis McGoven, 32, Guelf K, 6 October 2017.
- Peter Omand, 38, Kitchenar, 25 September, 2017.
- 23 -year -old Rattanbir Sidhu of Cambridge, 7 May 2019.
In Ontario, death is interrogated during being in custody that it is mandatory under the Coronors Act. The Maplehrst Correctional Complex has about 1,500 prisoners in moderate and maximum security.
‘We are able to answer’
Amber McFerson, McGovan’s sister, is among those who expect to speak during interrogation. It is actually being held and is ready to hear from 25 witnesses in 13 days.
He said that it is important that people know that his brother was more than just one addictive who died in jail.
“I want to continue the name of Curtis because he belonged to someone. He could have been better. Just as people say, maybe he is in a better place because he is no longer suffering. But it’s not what I believe,” he told CBC News that when interrogated in April.
“Nothing is not going to bring him back, but I think we are worthy to answer. The whole family is going to be a part of the zoom. And we are going to bring pictures and we are just going to fight. Curtis was a good boy. He was a big heart. He was a big heart. He was like a big teddy beer.”
The inquiry will investigate the circumstances around the deaths of the men and the jury may again make recommendations with the aim of preventing further deaths.
