Jobs Minister urged Canada Post to send a new proposal to the striking union

Jobs Minister Patty Hazdu on Monday urged the Canadian post to present a new offer to the striking post workers’ union quickly.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) took on picket lines on Thursday, when Ottawa announced a change in the operation of Crown Corporation to address its disturbed financial conditions.

Those changes include abolishing daily mail delivery, closing some rural post offices and transferring almost all Canadian houses to community mailboxes – the Sangh directly attacks the workers.

In an interview with the Canadian Press on Monday, Hazdu did not refuse federal intervention to end the latest strike. But he also said that the Canada Post needs to be quickly proposed on the table and the Sangh needs to seriously consider any proposal.

He said that a new course for a struggling postal service is on parties to come together after a two -year bargain to chart.

“This Union and the corporation together have to find out the future of their workforce and how they are really going, together, transform the Canada post into a viable, durable crown corporation,” said Hajdu.

“There is no time to waste here by the corporation, or the union, that proposal is once submitted once.”

In less than a year, a second strike in the Canada Post has already started taking a toll on businesses that rely on service as both sides dig on and Ottawa indicated the proposed cuts that the strike has been triggered.

The Canada Post was preparing to make a new proposal at the table on Friday, but is revising the proposal after the federal government’s announcement.

Canada Post spokesman John Hamilton said that there is still a “significant difference” between the Canada Post and the Union last week. He said that the new proposal would reflect a comprehensive directive to get the changes of the federal government and to get the postal service on solid rungs and to reduce the burden on taxpayers.

The financial position of the Canada Post is critical and the company claims that it was losing above $ 10 million per day as labor uncertainty had increased. The postal service has relied on federal support to keep lights in recent years.

Earlier this year, an Industrial Inquiry Commission report found that the Crown Corporation had effectively bankrupt and suggested a hosting of measures to maintain it – suggested that the federal government adopted wholesale in its announcement last week.

The minister and minister of the jobs and families and families responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario Patty Hazdu raised questions during the question period at the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Cupw’s negotiator Jim Gallant said that last week the union understands the financial troubles of the Canada Post, but the solution that the federal government is presenting is “extreme”.

He said that the Sangh wants the nationwide strike to push the federal government to return its overhaul of the Canada Post and review a public mandate.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned that the strike would be “massive impact” on small businesses relying on the Canada post, but the organization encouraged Otawa to move forward with planned reforms.
