LIP demands ticket service, Cong wary of its old mouths

Ludhiana: The Lok Insaaf Party’s merger with the Congress ahead of the municipal elections threatens to disrupt party dynamics, with tensions brewing over candidate selection across 95 wards.
The merger that happened during parliamentary elections has now set the stage for internal strife in the Congress as the LIP workers, who contested independently across all 95 wards previously are adamant about maintaining their expansive participation, posing a challenge for Congress panels tasked with candidate selection.
Simarjit Singh Bains’ LIP joined the Congress earlier this year after campaigning for Congress candidate Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and helping him win this parliamentary seat. With the MC elections now approaching, the Congress has received 250 nominations for the 95 wards already and these include submissions from members who were earlier in the LIP. Bains has emphasised that the LIP workers will contest across constituencies rather than limiting themselves to their traditional strongholds in South and Atam Nagar.
Bains said: “Our focus is to get our mayor elected, and both LIP and Congress workers will collaborate to achieve this.” Noting that several LIP candidates lost by narrow margins in the last municipal elections, he assured his supporters that the candidate selection will be based on mutual agreement and past performance records.
The Congress faces a delicate balancing act. Prioritising LIP could alienate long-time Congress workers eager for opportunities, risking internal dissent just as the party prepares for a court-mandated election. Party insiders acknowledge the challenge but remain optimistic about aligning efforts to present a unified front.
