The Newfoundland and the Labrador government announced that it was expanding access to free herpes vaccine for people aged 50 and older by September, but will start with providing immunocomized seniors on 1 June.

Premier John Hogan announced on Thursday, through the promise made during his campaign for Liberal leadership last month.

In a news release, the Department of Health and Community Services said that residents between the ages of 50 and 64 will be able to use the vaccine on June 1, with each other residents to reach September 1 from the age of 50 from the age of 50.

Currently, this province provides vaccine to seniors who are 65 and older, and are more than 70 people and immunocompromegred. In March, then Interim Health Minister John Hagi announced that the province would increase that reach on 1 June.

Shingles comes from varicella-joster virus (VZV), which also causes chickenpox and can cause rashes and lifelong nerve pain.

Health Minister Christa Lynn Howell told reporters that on Thursday, the province had allocated $ 8.5 million for the provincial vaccine program in this year’s budget, but it is estimated that providing vaccines for all more than 50 shows that it may cost about $ 30 million.

At that time, the progressive orthodox health critic Barry Petan called it a political move.

This week in the House of Assembly, the party wanted to ensure that Hogan clung to his word.

During the question period inside the House of Assembly on Monday, PC leader Tony Waikham asked several times whether Hogan would expand the availability of vaccine.

Havel and Deputy Premier Seobhan Kodi had asked the first three questions in place of Hogan.

Hogan replied for the fourth time.

“We will distribute vaccines to all over 50 years of age for shingles,” he said.

The declared expansion comes three days after that exchange, and was passed in the house just a day after the 2025–26 provincial budget.

Howell told reporters that once the government was able to announce, it was known that the amount of vaccine was required to expand.
