OpenAI will allow mature content, including erotica, to verified adult users from December

CEO Sam Altman said Tuesday that OpenAI will allow mature content for adult ChatGate users who verify their age on the platform starting in December.

“As we fully enforce age-gating and as part of our ‘Treat Adult Users Like Adults’ principle, we will allow even more like erotica for verified adults,” Altman wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.

Altman said that OpenAI had made ChatGPT “quite restrictive” to ensure that it was mindful of mental health issues, although this also made the chatbot “less useful/enjoyable for many users who had no mental health issues.”

OpenAI is capable of reducing mental health issues and has new tools that will allow it to safely ease restrictions in most cases, Altman said.

Altman said that in the coming weeks, OpenAI will release a version of ChatGPT that will allow people to better direct the chatbot’s tone and personality.

“If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human way, or use lots of emojis, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do that (but only if you want that, not because we’re usage-maximizing),” Altman said.
