Sudan’s Darfur leaves at least 1,000 dead villages after landslides

A landslide wiped a village in the western region of Sudan into the western region of Darfur, killing an estimated 1,000 people in one of the most deadly natural disasters in the recent history of the African country, a rebellious group controlled the area late Monday.

Sudan Liberation Movement-Army said in a statement that after the day of heavy rains, there was a tragedy on Sunday in Tarsin village of Marrah Mountains in Central Darfur.

The statement said, “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimating more than 1,000 people. Only one person survived.”

The group stated that the village was “taken completely to the ground,” the group said, appealed to the United Nations and International Support groups to help the bodies recover.

The ruling sovereign council in Khartum expressed condolences on “death of hundreds of innocent residents” in the landslide of Mount Mararah. In a statement, “all possible abilities” have been collected to support the region.

The footage shared by the Marrah mountain news outlet showed a flattened area among the mountain ranges, with a flat area with a group of people searching for the area.

Forced help group by violence

The tragedy has come as a disastrous civil war, after the tension between the country’s military and paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF), Sudan has been instigated, which exploded openly in the country in the country in April 2023 in the country, Khartum and other places in the country.

Most conflict-darfur regions have become mostly inaccessible for the United Nations and Support groups, which are looking at Sudan’s fight and fight between the army and the RSF.

Doctors at the aid group have warned doctors without any limits that many communities in Darfur, including the Mararah mountain, have been cut after more than two years of war and separation, these areas have been described as “a black hool” in Sudan’s humanistic response to Sudan.

It said in a July report that people in these communities have been “deprived of adequate help and stripped by the aid actors despite ending the terrible circumstances.”

The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which is concentrated in the Marrah mountain region, is one of the several rebellious groups operating in Darfur and Cordofain regions. It has not taken the side in the war.

The Marrah Parvat is a rugged volcanic chain extending 160 km south-west of L-Fasher, a sub-center of the fight between the army and the RSF. The region has turned into a center for displaced families, fighting in and around L-Fasher.

Many are already forced from their homes

Conflict in Sudan killed over 40,000 people, forced over 14 million to flee their homes and left some families to eat grass in a desperate attempt to survive as parts of the country’s famine.

According to the United Nations and Rights Group, it has been marked by atrocities including ethnicly motivated murder and rape. The International Criminal Court said that it was investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Tarasin village is located in the Central Marrah Mountains, a volcanic region with a height of more than 3,000 meters at its peak. A world heritage site, the mountain range is known for its low temperature and more rainfall than the surrounding areas, according to UNICEF. It is located more than 900 km west of the capital, Khartum.

Sunday’s landslide was one of the deadliest natural disasters in the recent history of Sudan. Hundreds of people die every year in the seasonal rains from July to October. According to the United Nations, last year’s heavy rainfall collapsed a dam in East Lal Sea province, killing at least 30 people.
