Punjabi youth in Manila dies after video call with kin

Ludhiana: The sudden death of a youth from Burj Naklian in Manila left his parents shattered and native village shocked.
Jagroop Singh, father of the deceased, said that Gurpreet Singh, his only son, had gone to Manila in 2017 and started a finance business there. On Nov 19, he watched his cousin’s wedding in Amritsar on live video call for some time but when the family called him later, he did not answer, Jagroop said.
He added that they called his son many times over two days but he did not answer.Eventually, he called his neighbours, who told him that his son was found dead in his room. Manila Police reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem.
Showing the medals that he had won, Jagroop and his wife Gurmeet Kaur said that he was a national level player of judo and karate. They said that he got a job in the Air Force on the basis of his sports achievements, but he wanted to settle abroad, so he went to Manila in 2017.
Jagroop said that Gurpreet was supposed to visit the village after seven years in Jan 2025. The distraught parents and villagers have appealed to the Centre and Manila govt to help bring Gurpreet Singh’s body to Punjab.
