VB to probe bribery in panchayat polls

Ludhiana: The Vigilance Bureau has taken note of the video allegedly showing bribery during panchayat elections in Dakha. The VB headquarters sent the case file to VB Ludhiana Range for investigation. The video shows former sarpanch of Dakha village, Jatinder Singh, confessing to giving bribes to an official to commit irregularities in the counting process.Police filed an FIR against him under sections 57 (abetting commission of offence), 173 (punishment for bribery), 329 (3) (punishment for criminal trespass), 351 (3) (punishment for criminal intimidation), 353 (statements conducting to public mischief) of BNS, different sections of Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act and various sections of Representation of People Act, on Oct 30.
A VB official said that Jatinder Singh applied for anticipatory bail, which was dismissed by the court. The case was transferred to VB, Ludhiana range on Nov 23.
Dakha Police booked Jatinder Singh on the complaint of Varinder Singh Sekhon of Dakha village, who was in the fray for the post of sarpanch, in Oct. In his complaint, Sekhon said that he was contesting against Jagjeet Singh Bhola and Jatinder was Bhola’s supporter. He said that Bhola won the elections by a margin of seven votes.
The VB official said that they would continue with the investigations now. He also said that more people were likely to be nominated in the FIR. tnn
