Westjet says that the personal information of some passengers has been stolen in cyber attack
Westjet says that earlier this year a cyber attack included some personal data including information about travel documents such as passports, but the credits and debit card numbers as well as the user passwords were not compromised.
In a note for customers, Westjet says that the personal information taken vary from person to person, but it may include name, date of birth, email address, mailing address, phone number, gender and recently travel booking history, including travel booking numbers.
It states that stolen data may also include information about travel documents used by passengers while traveling with Westjet, such as passport or other government issued identity documents, and other information.
Westjet warned that stolen information could be used for identity theft or fraud and says it is offering the identity of affected customers and offering free monitoring for 24 months.
The airline says it identified suspicious activity on its system on 13 June and found that criminals had temporarily accessed some of their systems.
The Office of Canada’s Security Commissioner has opened an investigation into the incident.
