Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced a drug peddler to 10-years rigorous imprisonment for possession of 48 intoxicant injections. Special court Judge Barinder Singh Ramana also imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on the convict and in default of payment of fine, he will have to further undergo rigorous imprisonment for six months.
On Dec 20, 2017, Doraha police had booked accused Bhawanjit Singh and Sewak Kumar of Mahilpur in Hoshiarpur, under the NDPS Act after
intoxicant injections, each injection of 2ml, were seized from the possession of Bhawajit Singh and Sewak Kumar.
Police later presented a chargesheet against the accused in the court after completing investigations in the case.
During trial, accused Sewak Singh reportedly died and proceedings against him were abated. Counsel for the accused argued that no independent witness had joined in the investigation.
The court held that the said submission of counsel for the accused is not sustainable for the reason that non joining of independent witness in this case is not fatal to the case of the prosecution because it had been able to prove its case by leading cogent and convincing evidence by examining all the seven witnesses.
