Ludhiana: The municipal corporation has moved forward with plans to re-auction five parking sites across the city to resolve the ongoing disputes between contractors, shopkeepers, and visitors. After approval from the technical advisory committee (TAC), officials are racing to finalise the process before the model code of conduct for the civic election is imposed.
Background and
developments
The existing parking site tenders expired nearly two years ago, but contractors have been operating under extensions due to administrative delays. These extensions have led to growing friction, with shopkeepers accusing parking employees of overcharging and misconduct, while contractors claim shopkeepers refuse to pay parking fees or acquire monthly passes as stipulated in the contract.
In this controversy, some shopkeepers leveraged political pressure to lower the cost of monthly passes and avoided obtaining them altogether subsequently. This standoff escalated recently to the involvement of legislator Gurpreet Gogi, who advocated on behalf of shopkeepers and urged the MC to cancel the parking tenders.
