NGO Takes Action Against Encroachments and Vanishing Green Cover in Ludhiana | Ludhiana News

NGO flags ‘vanishing green cover’ with NGT

Ludhiana: The members of NGO Action Against Corruption have raised the matter of lesser green cover in industrial towns and have written a letter to the chairman of the National Green Tribunal.
Through this letter, they have raised the issue of “green belts under encroachments and vanishing green cover” of the city due to which the residents are forced to live in the polluted environment. They mentioned a few encroachments on the green areas or parks by some of the influential people while the officials “instead of taking action against defaulters chose to remain silent”.
There was a green belt in New Model Town between railway line and Midha Chowk but it is completely under encroachments and despite residents protesting, the officials did not take any action.
The NGO members claimed that no official took their complaint seriously due to which now they are forced to approach the NGT. They rued that vanishing green cover is leading to suffocation and is causing serious problems to the children, senior citizens and other residents of the area especially in this season when air quality index is too poor. The members have requested the NGT to take action against the erring officials and direct them to remove the encroachments from the said green belts.
