Ludhiana: In a tragic incident that underscores the risks of unregulated late-hour liquor sales, a 19-year-old youth arguing for a promised beer bottle was murdered with sluggers and sticks at the hands of five acquaintances on Saturday night near the local railway station. Victim Kamaljeet Singh was from Mohalla Adarsh Nagar.
The teenager was with three friends when they encountered one of the accused, Happy Rajput, near the station around 1 am.The victim reportedly asked Happy to buy him a beer bottle. Initially agreeable, Happy later refused and joined two other friends, Sandeep and Sunil, who were seated in a nearby parked car.
When Kamaljeet confronted Happy about reneging on his promise, a heated argument erupted. Happy, along with his friends, Sandeep and Sunil, and two others, Shiva and Ankit, attacked Kamaljeet with sluggers and sticks they had in their car, based on what police claim to have found out.
Assistant commissioner of police Anil Kumar Bhanot explained to the media how Kamaljeet’s friends initially tried to intervene but fled the scene when the violence escalated. After Kamaljeet fell unconscious and the attackers fled, his friends moved him to Ludhiana’s civil hospital. He was, later, referred to Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
