Mumbai: From Monday, you can apply for a VIP number for a newly purchased car/SUV or two-wheeler online on the Parivahan website and make digital payments. The state transport department has streamlined the process to be simple, transparent, and faceless, a senior official from the transport commissioner’s office said on Sunday.
Previously, one visited the RTO for a special registration number, but now you can simply access the online Parivahan portal, complete registration by verifying your email ID or mobile number via OTP, and thereafter log in to select any choice number as per the category and check the price mentioned before proceeding. The VIP number will be allotted once the payment is confirmed, and the receipt generated can be utilised by the car dealer to affix the new registration number plate, the official stated.
Recently, the state revised the fee of Rs 6 lakh for the highly sought-after ‘1′ number for a car registration number plate in Mumbai. This is an increase from the previous fee of Rs 4 lakh.
An official said, “When one purchases a number online, be it ‘1′ or ‘9999′, the number should be available in the existing RTO series. Once purchased, it will be reserved and not available to any other applicant.” Numbers are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis.
The state has also made high-security registration plates (HSRP) mandatory — a significant step towards enhancing vehicle security and combating vehicle-related crimes. Implementing HSRP is crucial in states with high vehicular density, such as Maharashtra, with over 4.4 crore vehicles, including 70 lakh cars. Mumbai alone has 48 lakh vehicles, including 14 lakh cars/SUVs and a 29 lakh two-wheeler population as of Nov 15.
The official said that despite substantial costs for registration numbers, there is considerable demand for number ‘1′ among businessmen, industrialists, politicians, celebrities, and also wealthy farmers and traders across the state. In the case of two-wheelers, the revised fee for the ‘1′ number increased from Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh two months ago. Numbers like 0009, 0099, and 9999 attract fees of Rs 2.5 lakh for four-wheelers and Rs 50,000 for two- and three-wheelers. For 49 additional numbers, the fee rose to Rs 70,000 from Rs 50,000 for four-wheelers and to Rs 15,000 for two- and three-wheelers.
The increased fee for VIP numbers is expected to fetch additional revenue for the state govt. The fascination for a VIP number began in northern states, said an official.
