Ludhiana: The Tuesday-afternoon shocking incident of Giaspura in which a man and his two children had a narrow escape after falling into an open manhole of a municipal sewer ha prompted municipal commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal to initiate an inquiry to determine accountability.
The father was riding his bike with his children after school when he lost control and fell into the 12-foot-deep manhole. Passers-by quickly came to their aid, using a ladder to rescue the trio. Fortunately, they sustained only minor injuries and were taken to a nearby clinic for treatment.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who condemned the MC for its negligence in maintaining safety standards at construction sites. Videos of the fall circulated on social media, further fuelling public anger. Residents questioned why proper barricades were not erected around the manhole, emphasising that such an accident could have been fatal.
In response, the MC’s operation and maintenance (O&M) cell is issuing notices to the contractor responsible for the project. If the contractor’s explanation is deemed unsatisfactory, further action will be recommended. Senior officials have also instructed various branches within the MC to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols at all project sites.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding public safety in Ludhiana, in areas undergoing construction particularly.
